Apprenticeship Scheme
The Apprenticeship Scheme provides, in each year, for up to 6 young persons then between the ages of 18 and 29 to each be apprenticed to a Senior Liveryman, known as the Master of the Apprentice. There is the possibility of a grant of modest amount, by way of scholarship to support the Apprentice's studies for the ICSA examinations. There is a special programme for Apprentices, which includes meetings of professional interest, social and charity fundraising activities. Events have included a visit to the London Stock Exchange and Capita Registrars and talks by JP Morgan and Equiniti. During 2007 the Apprentices of the Company undertook a sponsored walk in the Ashdown Forest (see picture above, centre) raising £5,800 for London Youth, a charity that provides a network of some 400 youth clubs across the capital. The organisation's activities include Activenture, which is a residential adventure week for young people with disabilities and special needs (ages 8-18) throughout the school holidays. During 2008, a number of Apprentices and Freemen raised money for Cancer Research UK by participating in an abseil at Canary Wharf. The following criteria apply for potential apprentices:- The age bracket reflects the fact that those taking up study for the professional examinations of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators (ICSA) normally do so some years after having obtained a first degree. The candidate must be: An Apprenticeship shall normally last not less than 4 and not more than 7 years, during which time the Apprentice will be expected to pursue studies, which, in association with relevant work experience, can lead to Fellowship or Associateship of the ICSA. The total number of Apprentices at any one time shall not exceed 42. During the Apprenticeship the Apprentice-Master, functioning as mentor, will offer support and counsel. The Apprentice will be able to join in an informal programme of professional education and attend a limited range of Company functions. Subject to satisfying any criteria set out by the Charitable Trustees of the Worshipful Company of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators, an Apprentice may, at the discretion of the Trustees, receive a grant by way of scholarship to support his/her studies for the ICSA examinations.
