Pouring rain greeted entrants to the Lord Mayor’s Show on the 12th November 2016 as they assembled in Aldersgate and along London Wall. Spectators sought shelter in doorways and under any bit of canopy however meagre along the route. Rain wets the clothes but doesn’t dampen the British spirit for pageantry. On time the parade, led by the band of the Coldstream Guards, set off and the crowd began to cheer – distracting thoughts from rain to remembering to wave heartily, and, some of us, to doff our bonnets theatrically. The Chartered Secretaries Company, being in the Modern Companies Group, was quite some way back in the procession, but near enough to a large gold coloured bus to enable the Master, Senior Ward and banner carrier to remember where they should reassemble after champagne and sandwiches aboard HQS Wellington to fortify them for the walk back to the City.
Allowing for the inclement weather the Master, Christopher Hallam, Senior Warden, David Lock and banner carrier Court Assistant John Rowland Jones posed for a ‘before’ photograph outside Saddlers’ Hall. As every picture tells a story the ‘after’ photograph shows the results of the wet walk, albeit with the Master somewhat over egging it to the amusement of all.
